A Friend, A Book, and A Scary Story

Today, I’m sharing a friend with you, Lisa Buffaloe.

Lisa is an author, speaker, happily married mom, and host for Living Joyfully Free Radio. Her past experiences—molestation by a baby-sitter, assault, rape by a doctor, divorce, being stalked, cancer, death of loved ones, seven surgeries, and eleven years of chronic illness from Lyme Disease—bless her with a backdrop to share about God’s unending love and that through Him we find healing, restoration, and renewal. She is the author of Prodigal Nights and a contributing author of The One Year Book of Joy and Laughter.

At the end of the post, you can read about her new book, Grace for the Char-Baked. I know you’ll enjoy Lisa’s scary adventure and surprise ending. I hope you’ll leave her a comment.

Ice, Painters, and Angels
By Lisa Buffaloe

Gray-green clouds billowed on the evening horizon. With a quick goodbye to my co-workers, I hurried to my car. Rain fell and quickly morphed into sleet. The windshield wipers flapped at full speed, and I gripped the wheel as I drove the winding back roads to my parents’ home in the country.

Slowing down for a curve, my tires lost traction. The car spun out of control, skidded sideways and crashed into a deep ditch. Rattled but unscathed, I sat praying, wondering what to do. My car was stuck.

Thirty minutes from home and without a cell phone, I had the option to walk or sit and wait. If I waited, my parents wouldn’t know I was missing for at least an hour, and they wouldn’t know which country road I had taken.

Several farm houses sat off the road but even to reach them would be a long walk. The only person within walking distance was a young man who had his checking account at the bank where I worked. I didn’t know him well. I was a teenage bank teller, and he was a flirt.

Thinking perhaps he might be my best opportunity, I made my way up the ditch.

A beat-up, old station wagon stopped next to me and the passenger window rolled down. “Can I drive you somewhere?” The driver was an elderly man wearing stained painter’s coveralls.

The freezing rain picked up in intensity. I hesitated and glanced at the abundance of paint brushes, rollers, and paint cans spread throughout his vehicle. Cold and with limited choices, I opened the door and sat in his car. “I know someone nearby. He lives in a trailer up the road. Could you take me there?”

He looked at me, his gaze unwavering. “How well do you know him?” Somehow, I could see my dad asking the same question.

I squirmed at his fatherly scrutiny. “Not well, he has an account at the bank where I work.”
He shook his head. “I won’t take you there. How far do you live?”

“About thirty minutes. But you don’t have to drive me that far.”

Again his gaze locked into mine. “Do you have anyone you know well, or your parents know who lives closer?”

I couldn’t think of anyone for a few minutes, until I remembered a family friend. “Yes sir. One of my mom’s friends lives about ten minutes away.”

He nodded and we drove in silence.

The house stood nestled off the road in a stand of trees. The man pulled down the wet pine-straw covered driveway and stopped. I thanked him and offered to pay for his trouble. Declining my offer, he waited as I ran to the house.

My mom’s friend greeted me with open arms. A breeze filtered through the trees. I looked back. The pine-straw was undisturbed. My rescuer was gone.

Life is full of unseen dangers. Thankfully, we have a God who protects, guides, and holds our hand through the storms of life. And sometimes, He even sends someone wearing painter’s coveralls to carry us safely home.

Wounded Trilogy ~ book tour

Today, I’m happy to be part of the promotion for the Wounded Trilogy books of my e-friend, Lynn Dove. Lynn lives in Canada and has won awards for her writing and been showcased in a few compilation books, the latest being in Mother of Pearl: Luminous Lessons and Iridescent Faith.

Be sure to check out the end of the post. There’s a link for a giveaway.

How do you describe yourself, Lynn?

I am a Christ-follower, a wife, a mom, a grandmother, a teacher, and a writer (in that order). I wear so many different hats that I find prioritizing them tends to focus me better. I have been married to my best friend, Charles, for over 33 years and we have three wonderful children: daughter, Laurelle (husband, Matt), grandbaby Jaxon, and we have two live-at-home teenagers, Brett and Carmen.

I have been a teacher most of my adult life and still substitute occasionally at the private Christian school my youngest daughter attends. I love volunteering and working closely with the youth in our church, blogging, camping, and reading.

Tell us a little bit about your “Wounded Trilogy.”

Shoot the Wounded, the first book of the Wounded Trilogy, is written for youth and young adults. It addresses how lies and gossip destroy a person’s spirit and focuses on relevant themes such as bullying, teen pregnancy, and family violence. The story points the characters, and ultimately the reader, to hope in Jesus Christ. STW was a finalist in the 2010 Readers Favorite Book Awards.

Heal the Wounded is the sequel to STW. Heal the Wounded won a Bronze Medal in the 2011 Readers Favorite Book Awards in the Young Adult-Coming of Age category. HTW delves even deeper into the real world of teenagers trying to live out their faith in the midst of upset and struggle.

Love the Wounded is the final and dramatic conclusion to the series as it follows the lives of teenagers Jake, Leigh, Mike, Dylan, and Tim. They face a series of tragedies and events that make each of them question why God allows “bad things to happen to good people.” Released May 30, 2012, the book has already received a five star review from Readers Favorite.

As bullying is one of the issues I deal with, my books are listed as resources on the largest anti-bullying website in the world, Bullying.org

Why did you become a writer?

I know this is a cliché answer, but I have always wanted to write. I have written poetry and short stories since I was in elementary school. My teachers could always count on me to give a lengthy treatise on any subject.

I had no aspirations to be a novelist. My debut novel, Shoot the Wounded, actually started as a short story, but 100 pages later, I realized I couldn’t call it a “short story” any longer. It sat in my computer for ten years until, one day, as I deleted files, I came across it again. My husband encouraged me to finish it and get it published.

Do you tend to base your characters on real people?

Since two of my children are teenagers and I write novels for teenagers, I have been very purposeful not to base my characters on them. It would mortify them! Instead, I try to draw on my experience as a high school teacher and as a youth leader working with teenagers. So, each of my characters is composed of a smattering of many individuals, rolling them into one cohesive characterization.

My kids still say that they see themselves in the characters. I suppose that’s to be expected, but I pray that they see the character as positively portrayed and not otherwise.

Do you have any new book or writing projects now that the Wounded Trilogy is done?

I am working on an autobiographical account of my journey with breast cancer in 2001 called Life Lived. I am also working on a devotional as well as a few more articles set to be published in compilation books.

~Lynn’s books are available on Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, and on Lynn’s website.
Readers may also connect with Lynn on Twitter, Facebook, and on her blogs: Journey Thoughts, Word Salt, and on her website Shoot the Wounded.

How did you get started writing?

In 2006, God started speaking to me through my devotional time with Him. As I meditated on Scripture, a certain theme, point, or truth would stand out and resonate with me. I wouldn’t know fully what it meant unless I journaled it out in handwriting.

These journal entries turned into devotions I shared with my women’s small group to encourage them. Sometimes these devotions make it back to me and actually end up encouraging me! Isn’t funny how God uses things to get our attention?

Why did you write this Bible study?

I took a class on bringing the Bible to life and was excited about the inductive study method. It unlocked Scripture for me. I wanted to share it with it with my workplace small group. The women from my small group enjoyed the study tools I taught and encouraged me to share it with others.

Why did you pick Ephesians as the first book to try the inductive study method?

Ephesians is a wonderful book filled with the awesomeness of God and His blessings towards us. It is packed with valuable relational lessons that will not only draw us closer to God but with the added benefit of improving our earthly relationships too.

Is this study part of a series of studies?

Actually, yes it is. This is the first of a new line of Bible studies branded Your Discovery Series. There are several studies (James, Colossians, Haggai, Joshua, and Obediah) in the works to follow this one.

How would someone connect/follow you?

A Symphony of Seasons book tour

Today, I'm happy to be a part of the book blog tour for A Symphony of Seasons, written by my e-friend, Connie Arnold.

Seasons of Life

Some days we feel depressed and blue,
Not knowing what we are going to do,
Struggling just to get through the day,
Wondering why life must be this way.

Do you ever feel this way? I imagine most of us have felt at one time or another that life is a struggle, and we don’t know what we should do. Yet often things will turn around, and we will have days when things seem to go right and we enjoy life again.

These ups and downs of life are a bit like the seasons. Throughout our lives we will encounter change time after time and need to learn to find the joy and beauty of life again in our new circumstances.

For the ups and downs we face there are reasons,
Like nature, our lives also have seasons.

In autumn the leaves fall, leaving the trees looking lifeless and bare. Have you experienced that sluggish, exposed feeling in your life? Or as winter turns cold and icy, have you ever felt like you have a cold, frozen heart?

But, oh, the joy when spring returns with new life and beauty abounding! It is certainly a season of hope and renewal, and God brings this season into our lives as well, filling us with hope, renewed vigor and joy.

As summer brings warmth, sunshine and usually increased opportunities for relaxation and fun, the Son’s light shines into our lives bringing warmth to our cold hearts and joy to our lifeless existence.

In good times and bad, it’s increasingly clear
Every life has its seasons through each passing year.

May God bless you through each season of the year and all seasons of your life!

Feeling Loved book tour

Today, I bring you an interview with Marnie Swedberg, author of Feeling Loved... Connecting with God in the Minutes You Have. Be sure to check out the end for the give-aways...

Q. Does your book have a handle?

A. Feeling Loved provides “The Marnie Method” for connecting with God. I’m busy, you’re busy, we’re all super busy. The book explains how I meaningfully connect with the Creator of the Universe in the minutes I can, and how anyone can become best friends with God--even if you’ve never done it before for whatever reason.

Q. Who will enjoy this book?

A. Women, but specifically women who are too busy to think. It will connect best with women who juggle a lot of balls and sort of beat themselves up for not spending more time with God. It provides hope and a fast-track toward spiritual success.

Q. Aren’t busy women too preoccupied to read?

A. Not at all! Most busy women read a lot, they simply choose their reading material more carefully than those who have more leisure time. The book must apply to a felt need - and, honestly, I meet a lot of women who feel the need to grow closer to God.

Q. Is Feeling Loved just for super busy women?

A. It’s for everyone, of course, but the women who can best relate to me fall into two main categories: Those who are busy and loving it, and those who come seeking my help because they are too busy and hating it.

Q. How do you combine the writing life with home life?

A. I’ve almost always needed to write in the night: it’s the only time I can be uninterrupted. I try to be accessible to family and employees during the day and sometimes I succeed. It’s never easy to find time to write.

Q. What was the hardest part of writing this?

A. Finding time. That’s always the hardest part. As the owner and manager of a restaurant, retail store, espresso café and several mega websites, it is hard to fit the writing of books between catering orders, bills, vendors, traveling to buyers’ shows, speaking at live engagements, taking kids to college, managing our home, and still finding a few hours for some sleep.

Q. What do you want readers to take away from reading your book?

A. Inspiration. Most of the people who read my stuff or hear me speak say that they feel motivated and inspired after spending time in my brain. This makes me happy. I hope many women will grow closer to Jesus as a result of this book!

Q. Do you promote online through other means? Website? Blog?

A. I just do social networking. I have a blog, numerous SN sites and thousands of connections, but my main line of communication is the “Marnie Minute” which goes out to thousands of email friends every week.

Q. You are giving away free stuff. If so, what?

A. For sure! There are two free offers with no strings attached, plus other offers to those who purchase books during our launch party, November 8-11. The totally free offers are 1) an online personality test and 2) my online memorization tool, both available from www.Marnie.com. The book-buyer's offers are also cool. If you buy one book from any source between November 8-11, you can request the downloadable audio book for free (a $19.99 value). If you buy more, there are other great offers! Check it all out at www.Marnie.com.

Q. Is there anything that you would like to add?

A. I hope readers will find out when I’ll be speaking in a city near you - and come meet me! That would make my day!

Q. Where else can readers get in touch with you? Twitter, Blog, Facebook, etc?

A. I am MentorMarnie at Twitter and MarnieSwedberg at Facebook and LinkedIn. I’d love it for people to keep in touch!

Enter to Worship - Exit to Serve book tour

Enter to Worship - Exit to Serve
by Ronald K. Gray (Xulon Press)

Today, I bring you an interview with Ronald K. Gray, author of Enter to Worship – Exit to Serve. If you would like your name entered for the give-away of the book, please leave a comment at the end of this post.

About the Author

Ronald Gray serves the Kingdom of God through sharing the uncompromised Word of God. He has been faithful to his call since 1974. He is on the board of International Outreach Ministries and Charles Simpson Ministries. He is the Director of Mission Growth for IOM leading short-term teams to various countries in the world.

Ronald began his ministry with Gulf Coast Teen Challenge in Pensacola, FL. He has served as an Associate Pastor and Senior Pastor. Ronald and his wife Sharon have lived in the Mobile, AL area since 1995. He and Sharon have two daughters and four grandchildren.

Ronald has traveled extensively in the United States and in over 38 countries, spreading the message of the Kingdom of God. Many people have received salvation, healing, restoration, and deliverance in their lives.

What is the book about?

While the book’s title puts it in the praise and worship section in book stores, the book is more about the total life of the believer. Nehemiah10:39 is the core scripture for the book’s teachings.

Nehemiah had gone to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls and also rebuilt the temple, restoring worship to the people. Worship was centered around sacrifice. I use the different groups pictured in Nehemiah to talk about fundamental areas of the believers life.

The scripture says they would not forsake the temple of God. We have forsaken the house of God today. We are so busy with our agendas, we have left the true reason for worship. God is looking for something real from our lives, not just our words.

Why Enter to Worship - Exit to Serve?

The life of the believer comes from our life in God. We bring to Him a sacrifice of our monies, our gifts, our fruits and lay them at His feet. The premise for most Christians today is what can God do for them instead of how can I worship God with all that is within me. The scriptures teach us that everyone has something to offer.

When we worship in the fullness of our lives, God then fills us to be able to affect our world. We then exit to serve God through proclaiming His Word, serving those around us and exalting His name in all the earth. Everything we do in church is to help us fulfill God’s calling on our lives in the world.

What do you think is the most important chapter of the book?

In over 35 years of full time ministry, I have never heard anyone else teach about porters. In Nehemiah 10:39, it lists porters between priests and singers. I thought that was very interesting and researched porters. It is basically a janitor.

Servants that do the basics, people who do ordinary things to keep ministries going. God wants servants. That is a concept that is lost in the big time world of church ministries today. Jesus came to serve. I believe that we can make a difference in our community, our neighborhoods, and our world if we are willing to lay our lives down to serve God.

What do you hope to accomplish with your book?

I hope that ordinary believers will recognize they have something to offer. We can bring our monies and touch the nations. We can bring our gifts and see the power of God touch people and their needs. We can offer our fruits and not wait for the pastors or elders, but be instruments to bring life to those around us who are seeking a relevant relationship with Jesus.

The five fold ministries of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher were never supposed to do everything in the church. The church is supposed to be equipped for ministry. Everyone should be able to proclaim the message and everyone should have praise for the God we serve. That should not happen just on Sunday mornings between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. We should be able to give God praise in our homes and throughout the week. I truly believe this can be the church’s finest hour.

Are there other available resources connected with this book?

Yes. I taught my book at a conference and had it professionally recorded on video and audio. These sessions are great for small groups and Bible studies. There is a Study Guide to help the leader go through the sessions. The book and the video provide different insights that will help people to grow into maturity.

Where are these resources available to purchase?

You can obtain this book and many other resources on my web site at RonaldGrayMinistries.org.
